“A worm is an animal like us, it has cells, it has neurons, it has a stomach, it has muscles and so on. But it’s very, very simple and very cheap to work with and if you’re interested in ageing, what you really need to be able to do is measure the length of life easily and these animals actually age and die after only two to three weeks.”

“To date the longest lived worms, their adult life span was increased by about a thousand per cent, so they’re living around tenfold longer than the normal wild-type worms. So ageing is very plastic, that’s what this work says, it’s plastic, it’s not set in stone, you can manipulate it, you can slow it down in the laboratory and it’s quite easy to do.”
8. Close of microscope and screen in background
9. SOUNDBITE: (English) Dr David Gems, evolutionary biologist, Institute of Healthy Aging, University College London
“Ageing is controlled by genes that’s for sure. Genes have a very powerful effect on ageing and genes work through controlling proteins and proteins are what drugs usually work on, so what this research should do is identify drug targets, which will yield effective drugs that could slow ageing and in fact some of them are already in testing in the laboratory.”

“People have very unrealistic expectations from taking antioxidant supplements. In the case of fruit and vegetables, well of course your GP, your doctor will tell you that if you can switch from a diet which is high in fat and salt and stop eating hamburgers and chips and eat a lot more vegetables and fruit, on the whole that’s healthy. But how exactly that works is not really clear. It’s not clear that this has, this is caused by, particularly, antioxidants in the diet.”

“Much of the marketing of these products is essentially exploitative, but you know, it’s for the consumer to be informed and cautious. You can’t really blame the suppliers, the consumers are part of the deal, they have to be cautious and they should be sensible and realise that, at the moment, what the science is saying is that ageing is still mysterious and there aren’t clear products that are highly effective against ageing.”
